Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is one of the most imortant vitamins for you during pregnancy and the postpartum period. You can read more about the newest research into low Vitamin D and the risk for postpartum drepression in this new study.
How much Vitamin D Do I Need?
A new study shows that If you are exclusively breastfeeding, you need 6400 IU per day in order for your infant to have sufficient levels. This is challenging for many women, which is why the AAP recommends direct supplementation of the infant with 400 IU daily.
Why?
The vitamin D concentration in breast milk of women taking 400 IU vitamin D per day is relatively low, leading to vitamin D deficiency in breastfeeding infants. As a result, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding infant vitamin D supplementation within days after birth.
